INTRODUCTION

Christ United Methodist Church is a thriving church of more than 2300 members in Greensboro, NC. Christ Church is known for an excellent worship arts ministry, including both traditional liturgical worship and passionate contemporary worship. Our sanctuary seats about 650 people and is graced by the three-manual C.B. Fisk organ, op. 82, with 64 ranks, 43 stops, and mechanical action. (christgreensboro.org/fiskorgan/) Because of excellent acoustics, guest artists and community music groups frequently perform in the space. We also have two adult choirs, a youth choir, three children’s choirs, and three handbell choirs, in addition to a number of seasonal choirs.

Because of the retirement of our longtime organist, Christ Church is seeking a full-time Organist who would also assume leadership of one or more of the following, depending upon desire, interest, and ability: Handbells, Instrumental Music, and Children’s Music. This individual would work closely with our Coordinator of Music & Arts, who is primarily responsible for choral music for adults and youth, the coordination of traditional worship services, and the direction of dramatic productions and special services.

ORGANIST (Essential Role)

  • Prepare and play organ for two traditional services each Sunday at 8:30 and 11:00
  • Rehearse with and accompany adult choirs on organ and piano
  • Rehearse and direct choral groups, at times, in conjunction with the primary choral director
  • Participate in regular and seasonal worship planning in conjunction with the worship team
  • Participate in seasonal concerts and special worship services
  • Oversee routine maintenance of the Fisk organ and pianos
  • Work with and equip laity responsible for different aspects of traditional worship
  • Play funerals (not always compensated) and have right of first refusal for weddings (compensated)
  • Maintain regular office hours and availability to the congregation as related to the position
  • Attend staff meetings and other administrative meetings, as needed

QUALIFICATIONS

  • At least a master’s degree in organ performance or sacred music
  • Experience and strong skills in playing for worship services, including accompanying choirs and congregational hymn singing, and at least basic skills in improvisation in the worship context
  • Experience in choral conducting
  • A sense of calling to worship leadership in a local church
  • Familiarity with United Methodist theology and hymnody preferred
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work as a part of a staff team

HANDBELLS & INSTRUMENTAL MUSIC (Potential Role)

  • Coordinate and direct handbell choirs, including three standing choirs and seasonal youth choirs
  • Manage handbell music library
  • Oversee communications with choirs and recruitment of new ringers
  • Recruit and coordinate instrumentalists for worship services and special events
  • Develop and direct instrumental ensembles as needed
  • Work with other worship and pastoral staff to incorporate handbell choirs and instrumentalists into regular and occasional worship services and special events
  • Oversee routine maintenance of five octaves of Malmark handbells, four octaves of Malmark handchimes, and related equipment

CHILDREN’S MUSIC (Potential Role)

  • Develop an overall vision and strategy for Children’s music and drama ministries for ages infant through 6th grade and partner with staff and volunteer leaders to implement
  • Oversee communication with families and recruitment of new choir members
  • Oversee music program for infants through three year olds, currently including BabyGarten and Musicplay
  • Direct and accompany multiple children’s choirs for four year olds through 6th grade
  • Manage children’s choir music library
  • Coordinate children’s musical productions and special services involving children’s choirs
  • Work with worship and pastoral staff to incorporate children into regular and occasional worship services and events
