Take Thou Authority
Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. –Joshua 1:6
Join the Appalachian District for a day with Mike Slaughter, Lead Pastor of Ginghamsburg United Methodist Church, in the Dayton, Ohio area. Mike will lead the discussion about what it means to be the leader of the church in a world that is less and less receptive to pastoral leadership.
When Mike arrived in 1979, Ginghamsburg Church was a semi-rural, two-room country church with a $27,000 annual budget that has now grown into a missional movement impacting its local community and the world for God’s kingdom. But it wasn’t immediately easy. As a 27-year-old first time-lead pastor, his first challenge was to overcome the preferences of the church’s long-entrenched godfathers and godmothers, whose only concern was maintaining the status quo. Yet, he knew as lead pastor, following the lead of the negative or faithless resisters, would risk being buried in the wilderness with them.
Leading change first requires a movement leader to be strategically focused. In our day together, we will explore how to take courage as we develop the three components of a missional strategy: a clear picture, strategic plan and consistent practice, with a focus on developing repeatable discipleship systems. Also, we’ll learn how applying the United Methodist Church’s Four Areas of Focus can serve as an exponential strategy for growing disciples as your church becomes part of a world-changing, Spirit-empowered “hell can’t prevail” community of action.
