Ministry WITH the poor is one of four focus areas of the UMC. Church leaders recognize that working side by side with those striving to improve their situation is more effective long term than top-down charity. Moreover, meaningful ministry with the poor can be transformative for both people of privilege and people struggling in poverty. Haywood Street Congregation, a mission church in Asheville, NC, has been recognized by the UMC’s General Board of Global Ministries as a model program for its WITH* initiative.
The upcoming “A Welcoming Table” workshop, May 24-26, 2017, offers an opportunity for clergy and laity to learn more about Haywood’s organizational structure and examine best practices for sustainable and transformational ministry WITH the poor.
