Director of Youth and Outreach

The Director of Youth and Outreach at Aldersgate United Methodist Church (Durham, NC)has a primary responsibility to develop a program for spiritual formation for youth in grades 6-12 and to coordinate a comprehensive ministry of outreach to involve all ages in our church. Outreach includes mission and service opportunities, community engagement, evangelism, and hospitality.

Major responsibilities to include:

Leadership Development

  • Inspire, motivate, lead, and direct the recruiting and training of volunteers within the settings of youth and outreach ministries
  • Develop vision for youth and outreach and implement new ministries, coordinating with the overall mission and vision of the church
  • Enable, equip, and delegate key ministry tasks and empower others to serve in meaningful ministry
  • Assist youth council and leaders in developing the overall vision and direction of youth ministry
  • Assist with establishing focus for outreach in alignment with our church vision

Programs and Events

  • Oversee weekly and periodic youth programs, including youth Sunday School, Sunday evening program, Confirmation, and Pilgrimage
  • Plan and lead age-appropriate local and regional youth mission trips annually
  • Develop and implement an overall curriculum plan for youth spiritual formation in collaboration with the director of Christian Formation
  • Develop opportunities for youth spiritual formation during the week, including activities such as Wednesday Night Live, Bible studies, and breakfast before school
  • Maintain accurate records of attendance, budget, and calendar, with regular timely updates
  • Facilitate communication, administration, and training for programs such as Upward Soccer and other outreach events
  • Assist the Missions Committee and mission team leaders in the coordination of national and international short term mission trips

Relational Ministry

  • Meet with various people and small groups inside the church to advocate for youth and share opportunities for outreach
  • Collaborate with other ministry leaders to integrate youth into the overall life of the church, including activities such as worship leadership, VBS, music ministries, and service opportunities
  • Provide spiritual leadership and mentoring for youth, whether by attending school events, providing support in a crisis, or regular day-to-day conversation
  • Partner with youth parents to encourage discipleship within the family
  • Work with youth council to ensure that every student’s voice is heard and represented in discussions and decisions relating to youth ministry and the overall church


  • Coordinate a comprehensive ministry for involving the congregation in service opportunities and engaging with our community
  • Use opportunities in worship and discipleship meetings to involve and educate the congregation in missional living
  • Connect with organizations, people, and resources in and beyond the congregation to develop partnerships in mission
  • Assess neighborhood and community needs to ensure that our outreach strategy matches our local context
  • Work with pastor and other staff to develop systems and processes for follow up and connection
  • Train leaders and congregation to embody an attitude of radical hospitality and to create a welcoming environment, especially during worship services and important church events


  • Undergraduate degree with an emphasis on religious studies or youth ministries. Advanced degrees are preferred.
  • A record of successful youth ministry.
  • Excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to resolve conflict, listen, and address concerns in a tactful and professional way
  • A relentless desire to shepherd, shape, and lead young people in their spiritual development as disciples of Jesus Christ.
  • Willingness to coordinate a flexible work schedule as required
  • Excellent administration and project management skills
  • Knowledgeable about contemporary youth culture and the unique challenges faced by adolescents
  • Ability to leverage digital communication methods including social media to connect with our community
  • Eagerness to learn and to seek new insights to connect with youth and develop outreach opportunities 
  • Ability to play musical instrument(s), while not a requirement, is preferred
  • Applicants are expected to participate fully in the life of the church including attending weekly worship, regular staff meetings, important church-wide events, and scheduled youth events
  • Take responsibility for personal growth by maintaining a weekly Sabbath time and seeking continuing education opportunities
