Hood Theological Seminary Announces New Director of United Methodist Studies

Among the new faces on the Hood Theological Seminary (HTS) campus this August will be that of Dr. Ashley Boggan Dreff who will be the new as Director of United Methodist (UM) Studies and Student Recruitment effective August 1, 2017. As the focal faculty person in United Methodist Studies, she will be responsible for teaching required courses for the M.Div. degree, as well as advanced level courses in Methodist History, American Religious History, or Women/Gender Studies. In her administrative role, Dr. Dreff will foster networking with United Methodist (UM) districts and conferences, expand bridge-building with colleges and organizations, serve as a strategic team member with the Office of Recruitment to cultivate relationships to enhance enrollment, and enrich opportunities for UM student professional development.

Dr. Dreff has a Ph.D. in American Religious History from Drew Theological School with a concentration in Wesleyan/Methodist Studies and Women/Gender Studies. Her doctoral dissertation topic was Methodist and the New Morality: A History of Twentieth-Century Methodist Sexual Ethics (March 2017). She holds a B.A. in Art History (Cum Laude) from the University of Arkansas (2009) and an A.M. in Religious Studies (History of Christianity) from the University of Chicago Divinity School (2012).

As a lifelong United Methodist, she has devoted significant attention to historical writing and archival preservation. She was an Assistant Archivist for the General Commission on Archives and History of the United Methodist Church (2012-2014). She was also a General Conference Legislative Researcher and Analyst for the Connectional Table of the United Methodist Church (2015-2016). She has a certificate in Online Teaching and Learning from the Association of Theological Schools (ATS). While at Drew University, she was the recipient of the Florence Ellen Bell Scholarship (2012-2014).

Hood Theological Seminary, located at 1810 Lutheran Synod Drive in Salisbury, NC, is a graduate and professional school sponsored by the A.M.E. Zion Church and approved by the University Senate of The United Methodist Church. Its student body currently comprises persons from many different denominations. As a theological seminary, it provides for the church and the world an educational community in which Christian maturity and ministerial preparation take place together.

Director CovNursery (8weeks to 4 years old) and CovKids (Kindergarten-5th grade) Job Description

Classification: Full Time

Position Overview: The Director of CovNursery and CovKids is responsible for the overall worship, discipleship, and engagement of our children membership.  This includes working with our Children’s Ministry and Nursery Ministry teams to create a comprehensive program for our children. Supervise CovNursery and CovKids staff.

Primary Areas of Responsibilities

  • The Director of CovNursery and CovKids is the staff leader of the Nursery and Children’s Ministry Teams while being an attending member of the Church Council.  The director will provide leadership for the CovNursery and CovKids teams, while assigning them tasks to accomplish the mission of Covenant and the children’s ministry department.
  • Responsible for planning and execution of a well-rounded vision for children’s ministry that grows children in their relationship with Christ.  This should include a comprehensive curriculum from infant to 5th grade, a weekly worship utilizing staff and volunteers, and other special events such as VBS and retreats.
  • Involved in creating a welcoming and safe environment for children and adults, coordinating the nursery, Sunday morning lessons, Sunday morning children’s worship, and Sunday night activities for children.
  • Responsible for maintaining good stewardship of budgets and the building space provided, as well as the volunteers’ time. In addition, must implement Safe Sanctuary policies and procedure for the Nursery and Children’s Ministries.
  • Engage in continuing education opportunities associated with children’s ministry. Actively engage parents to volunteer and participate in children’s ministry activities.
  • Be creative, dependable, energetic, and a self-starter who sees teaching the gospel of Jesus Christ to children as a calling from God. Be strong in organization, delegation, and planning skills for ministries and programs.
  • Demonstrate leadership ability in a team environment with an ability to articulate and implement a vision for the children’s ministry of the church with understanding of how to set and accomplish goals.
  • Connects and communicate effectively with children, adults, and families understanding the value of relationships.
  • Models a personal growing relationship with Jesus Christ and perform all other duties as assigned by the pastoral and leadership team.

The Director of CovNursery and CovKids job description is employed by the Staff Parish Relations Committee and shall work under the supervision of the Discipleship Pastor concerning ministerial goals. Ministry plans must be submitted six months in advance.  Arrangements must be made in advance for absences and vacations.  Job performance will be reviewed annually by the Staff Parish Relations Committee with input from the Discipleship Pastor and Executive Pastor to clarify expectations, affirm accomplishments, set short and long-term goals, and plan for ways to improve and strengthen job performance.

Education and Experience

This position requires a strong spiritual background and commitment to the church and to the ministry of the church.  A minimum of 2 years of experience building and growing a Children’s Ministry team and possession of a Bachelor’s Degree in Christian education, Elementary education or Early Childhood education is required. The candidate must have a proven track record of effective leadership, judgment, and above reproach character.

Compensation commensurate with qualifications and experience of the selected candidate.
